Intellectual Property Law

Over recent years Cyprus has increased protection in the area of Intellectual Property Law so as to protect international and local rights. The legal system of Cyprus, modelled on the English common law system since independence in 1960, is harmonised with the acquis communautaire of the European Union (EU) and the fiscal and regulatory regimes of Cyprus are fully aligned with EU norms. Cyprus is a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and of numerous other International Conventions and Treaties with regards to Intellectual Property Rights and has been ratifying these Treaties by amending the Copyright Law and Related Rights No. 59/1976 which is now in full compliance with the acquis communautaire of the Community and International Intellectual Property Law. Cyprus has also enacted its own ‘intellectual property box’ regime which contributes to an organisation’s tax optimization. These steps maximise the protection for Intellectual Property owners and render Cyprus an ideal location to register, establish and manage an Intellectual Property structure.
